Insuring your baby in Switzerland: the checklist before 3 months

A new child triggers several insurance steps, some you can't afford to miss. The clear, step-by-step guide.

Basic insurance: mandatory before 3 months

Your baby must be enrolled with a LAMal fund within 3 months of birth. Enrolment is backdated to the day of birth, so the newborn's care is covered from the start.

Supplementals: before birth, ideally

Unlike the basic plan, supplementals (LCA) are subject to the insurer's acceptance. Taken out before birth, they're often accepted without a health questionnaire for the baby — an advantage that disappears if a health issue arises.

The baby can have its own insurer

The child doesn't have to be with the same insurer as the parents. You can choose the most advantageous fund for them, and check your entitlement to cantonal subsidies based on household income.

The essential checklist

Before birth: review supplementals. At birth: AHV/AVS number, LAMal enrolment before 3 months, notify the employer (allowances), update home/liability insurance and 3rd-pillar beneficiaries. We handle this list with you.
