Choosing your LAMal deductible: 300 or 2,500?

The deductible is the simplest lever to adjust your premium. But the highest isn't always the most cost-effective. How to find the right level.

What the deductible is

It's the annual amount of health costs you pay yourself before insurance reimburses. It ranges from CHF 300 to 2,500 for an adult. The higher it is, the lower your monthly premium.

The break-even calculation

A high deductible (2,500) is worth it if you rarely see a doctor: you save on the premium more than you spend on care. A low deductible (300) protects you if you have regular costs. The break-even point depends on your expected health spending.

Don't forget the co-payment

Above the deductible, you still pay 10% of costs (co-payment), capped at CHF 700/year for an adult. Factor it into your maximum annual risk.

Our method

We start from your actual health costs over the last two years to simulate each deductible and identify the one that minimises your expected total cost — not just the headline premium.
